Alpha Transparency Issue in 2.48a
Does anyone know how to create the textured alpha transparency results with the latest version of Blender?
I've tried to follow the tutorial 4 video step-by-step and it doesn't give a transparent cube at the beginning. It acts like it's not bringing in the texture images alpha values properly. If I load a .blend file created in what I think was an earlier version of Blender, the transparencies seem to be working on existing objects, but any new object I add to the scene does not display transparency.
For now I'm going to use 2.47, but it'd be nice to know a solution.

ALPHA TRANSPARENCY ISSUE IN 2.48A
blendernewb
I am going through the process of creating a semi-transparent object from scratch using Blender 2.48a. I had no trouble with tutorial04 and Blender 2.48a.
For my own creation, I have found that I had to select each face in the UV view to ensure the face was transparent ("alpha" selected in edit modes "texture face" tab), not opaque. A global select of all of the faces did not work. Having set all faces to alpha Blender's 3D View rendered the object OK. SIO not yet rendering right though; black not transparent. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Re: Alpha Transparency Issue in 2.48a
Review the video tuorial04 I'm explaining clearly the process of binding alpha texture to am object, affect the blending mode and rendering it with back and front face enabled...
Re: Alpha Transparency Issue in 2.48a
cgen2,
Here's what I've learned since my post:
1) 2.47 has alpha turned on when you apply the image texture, so tutorial 4 looks right (when all you have is a single textured cube and a plane in the scene)
2) 2.48a has some new "features", one of them being that the faces are opaque unless you change them to alpha, this makes tutorial 4 look wrong until you manually change the state of each face to be alpha
3) 2.48a will allow you to change multiple faces at once, using the "copy" buttons on the texture face property editor window
4) I think your issue is related to sio2's blending requirements - go to "shading->materials->map to" and change "Texture blending mode" from "mix" to "alpha"
sio2interactive mod, do you have any plans to do the tutorials with the 2.48a release? or in HD?

CORRECTION "alpha" should be "value"
