How does Billboarding work?

How does Billboarding work?
From what I've seen in the videos, I setting a texture face to "billboard" should be sufficient. Still, I can't get billboards to work correctly. I've created a plane in Blender, set the billboard property per face and saved that. When rendered, it always faces its original orientation. Do I miss anything?
Thanks,
Matt

It is explained tutorial04 video... maybe review the video again... lemme know if it still cause problem...
Re: How does Billboarding work?
I saw all four videos... :-(
However, I recreated the billboard in question. Created a plane, set a transparent image as the texture, changed the translucency, changed "map to" to "value", flipped the normals, changed a face to "billboard", and then it worked. No idea what went wrong with the first attempt.
Thanks anyway
