I have actually read this post before.
But I couldn't find the part of the code that sets different images to different faces of a cube.. (e.g. the name of the cube is Cube.001)

This is done by the vertexgroup every group have a material applied on them...
Basically what you got is:
1. The VBO all vertex data
2. Vertex group, indices used to draw the object... whatever indices assigned within a group will be applied with its respective material.
